How to use it
- 1Choose the period (last day, 7 or 30 days) and the minimum magnitude.
- 2Hover over the map or check the table; each place links to the earthquake's USGS record.
How it calculates
- It queries the USGS FDSN service for earthquakes of the chosen magnitude or above in the period. The response is cached for 10 minutes.
- “Reviewed” means a seismologist has checked the location and magnitude; “automatic” means not yet.
Verifiable example
With “Last 7 days” and magnitude 4.5 you see every earthquake of that size worldwide in the last week, with its time in your time zone, depth and a link to the USGS record.
Limitations
- It isn't a warning system: data arrives minutes late and automatic magnitudes change when reviewed.
- Place names are the USGS's, in English and relative to the nearest town.
- For Spain, the official source is the National Geographic Institute (IGN).
